Elie Sauna Guide (2026): Harbour Saunas, Prices, Booking
Elie sauna guide: both wood-fired saunas at Elie Harbour in Fife, 2026 prices, how to book, child rules, parking and the Elie Holiday Park sauna.
An Elie sauna session is one of the best-sited sweats on Scotland's east coast: a cabin on the dunes, the harbour wall beside it and Elie beach a few steps away for the cold dip. Elie Seaside Sauna is the original venue of Scottish Seaside Saunas (the Fife operator that also runs saunas at Cellardyke and St Andrews East Sands), and it now runs two saunas side by side at the harbour. Elie itself is a village on the East Neuk (the string of old fishing villages along Fife's south-east coast), about an hour's drive from Edinburgh.
This guide covers both Elie saunas, what each costs, how booking works, the rules for children, and the second operator that runs a sauna at Elie Holiday Park. Prices and session details come from the operators' own pages, checked in October 2026.
Where is the Elie sauna?
Both saunas stand on the dune at the entrance to Elie Harbour, Elie & Earlsferry, Fife (postcode KY9 1EG). From the benches you look west across Elie Bay, and the sand starts at the foot of the deck, so the sea dip is a short walk rather than a drive.
Parking is the catch. The operator says harbour parking is extremely limited, especially in summer, and the road down to the harbour crawls when the village is busy. Arrive on foot or by bike if you can; if you drive, leave a generous margin to find a space before your slot starts.
Which Elie sauna should you book?
The two saunas suit different trips. The Harbourmaster is the shared, seat-by-seat sauna for a solo visit or a couple; the Original is a private sauna for a group that wants the whole space to itself. Some older listings call the larger sauna Shore and the original Dune; the operator's own site now uses the Harbourmaster and the Original.
The Harbourmaster: shared sessions by the seat
The newer, larger sauna, built from British thermally treated poplar and ash inside and Scottish Borders larch outside. It seats 12 for communal sessions (up to 14 on private hire), has high benches suited to Aufguss (a guided heat ritual with fanned steam), a large cooling deck and cold showers. One-hour seats were £16 when we checked.
The Original: private hire for up to 6
The first Elie sauna, open on the dunes since June 2022: a converted horse trailer lined with heat-treated aspen, with floor-to-ceiling glass facing west. It is private hire only, from £96 for one hour or £192 for two, with 10 minutes of each booking set aside for changeover and cleaning.
How much does the Elie sauna cost?
Prices listed on the operator's Elie page in October 2026:
Harbourmaster seat: £16 per person for a one-hour communal session
Shared with other bookers, up to 12 people.
Original private hire: £96 for one hour, £192 for two
The whole sauna for your group of up to 6, so roughly £16 a head when full.
Memberships: from £27 a month
Valid across all three Scottish Seaside Saunas locations: Elie, Cellardyke and St Andrews. Gift vouchers work across all three too.
Loyalty on the Original: five private sessions for the price of four
Aimed at regulars who hire the horsebox sauna often.
Prices change with the season, so treat these as a guide and confirm the current rate when you book. A £16 seat sits within the £10 to £30 most UK wild saunas charge for a shared session; our beach sauna directory compares other sea-dip venues.
How do you book a session?
Booking is online through the operator's booking page: pick Elie, choose a Harbourmaster seat or an Original private slot, then a time. You can cancel or change a booking yourself by logging into the customer area. Sessions run in all weather; on the rare occasions the operator cancels for safety, it rearranges or refunds.
For something bigger than the online system allows, such as both Elie saunas and both decks for a birthday, hen party or work event, the operator takes group bookings by email. The private Original also pairs with yoga: the founder, Judith Dunlop, is a yoga teacher who started Elie Yoga and co-founded the Elie Blue Tits, the village's cold-water swimming group.
Can children use the Elie sauna?
Yes, within firm limits set by the operator:
- Under-16s cannot book an individual seat.
- Children aged 12 to 16 come only as part of a private hire, with an adult.
- Under-12s are discouraged; where an exception is made, each child needs their own adult (a 1:1 ratio).
- Under-5s are not allowed, because of the burn risk from the stoves.
During the summer school holidays, the Harbourmaster runs dedicated family sessions at 11am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Our guide to sauna age limits in the UK explains why most operators draw the lines here.
Is there another sauna in Elie?
Yes. Wild Scottish Sauna, a separate mobile-sauna company with six pitches across Scotland's east coast, runs a beachside sauna at Elie Holiday Park. According to the park operator, Abbeyford Leisure, it typically opens Friday to Sunday, and guests staying at Abbeyford parks get 20% off selected sessions (the booking fee is not discounted). Wild Scottish Sauna offers private and shared sessions, and its site allows bookings up to 30 minutes before a session starts if space remains.
The two are easy to confuse online. If you search for an Elie sauna and want the harbour setting, the dune saunas and the cold showers, you want Elie Seaside Sauna. If you are already staying at the holiday park, or your dates fall on a weekend when the harbour slots are full, the Wild Scottish Sauna pitch is the alternative.
How did Elie Seaside Sauna start?
The first sauna, the horsebox now called the Original, arrived on the dunes in June 2022, the work of Judith Dunlop, and the business now trades as Scottish Seaside Saunas. The operator describes it as the first mobile sauna in the UK to be granted planning permission. In May 2024 The Courier reported her planning application for a bigger second sauna at Elie, alongside the original mobile unit. The Harbourmaster now stands beside the Original on the same dune.
The venue has picked up national attention since. Scan Magazine lists its recognition as The Times's number one sauna by the sea, a Sunday Telegraph top-ten UK sauna, and a 2024 British Sauna Society shortlisting for best waterside sauna in the UK and Ireland.
What else is near Elie for a sauna trip?
Elie is the middle stop on Scotland's densest stretch of seaside saunas. Cellardyke Seaside Sauna, run by the same company, sits beside a restored tidal pool about 20 minutes east along the coast, and St Andrews Seaside Sauna faces the North Sea at East Sands, roughly half an hour north. A membership covers all three, which makes a long weekend of one session a day straightforward. Our Scottish sauna breaks guide lays out that East Neuk route with bases, and the Scotland venue directory lists every Scottish venue we track.
