Harvia
Harvia Electric Sauna Heaters (KIP, Cilindro & Vega)
How to size a Harvia heater: about 1kW per cubic metre. KIP covers 3-9kW wall-mounted, Cilindro reaches 10.5kW with far more stone for heavier löyly.

How do you size a Harvia heater to your sauna?
Measure the room's length, width and height and multiply them for the volume in cubic metres. Harvia's guidance is about 1 kW of output per cubic metre, so a 2m × 2m × 2m cabin is 8 m³ and wants roughly an 8 kW heater.
Two things push that number up. Glass and uninsulated stone lose heat far faster than an insulated timber wall, so Harvia counts every square metre of it as though it added about 1.2 m³ to the room; uninsulated log walls count for about 1.5. A small cabin with a full glass door and a stone feature wall can therefore need a noticeably bigger heater than its raw volume suggests.
When you fall between two sizes, size up. An undersized heater has to run longer and harder to reach temperature, which shortens its working life as well as your patience waiting for it.
KIP, Cilindro or Vega: which Harvia range fits?
Harvia's home line-up splits three ways, and the choice is mostly about how much stone you want sitting above the elements. More stone means steam that keeps coming instead of a sharp burst that fades.
KIP - the default home heater
Wall-mounted, 3kW to 9kW (KIP30, KIP45, KIP60, KIP80, KIP90), with either a built-in control panel or a separate control unit. Stainless steel elements and triple-wall construction keep the outer surface cooler. This is the range most UK home cabins end up with.
Cilindro - for the best löyly
A stainless steel cylindrical column available floor-standing or wall-mounted, from 6kW to 10.5kW. Its shape carries far more stone than a flat wall heater - up to around 100kg on the larger models - which is what produces thick, sustained steam. Choose it if steam quality matters more than footprint.
Vega - for the smallest rooms
Compact wall-mounted stainless units for tight spaces, with the Vega Compact models starting well under 3.5kW. The steam is crisp and authentic, but the smaller stone load will not carry a long, heavy löyly session the way a Cilindro does.
What should you check before installing one in the UK?
Buy the UK or EU specification
Plenty of Harvia listings online are US-market units quoted at 240V 60Hz. Match the model to a UK 230V 50Hz supply rather than importing on price.
Confirm the electrical supply first
A sauna heater needs its own dedicated circuit, and the larger outputs may need a three-phase supply. Check the exact requirement in that model's installation manual with a qualified electrician before you buy - it is the step most likely to change which heater you can actually fit.
Respect the clearances
Every model specifies minimum distances to benches, walls and ceiling. These are safety limits, not guidance, and they affect where the heater can go in a small cabin.
Stack the stones properly
Use the stone size the manual specifies and stack loosely so air can move between them. Packed-tight stones make the elements work harder. Stones break down with heat over time, so restack and replace them periodically.
